The Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections 2024 saw a resurgence of the Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), as they claimed two of the four top positions, including the coveted President’s post. Rounak Khatri, representing NSUI, defeated ABVP’s Rishabh Chaudhary by over 1,300 votes, marking the party’s return to prominence after seven years.
NSUI's Lokesh Choudhary also secured the Joint Secretary post, beating ABVP's Aman Kapasia. This victory, as NSUI officials stated, was a testament to their “commitment to student-focused campaigning and constitutional values.” The results signify a shift in campus dynamics, with NSUI’s increased focus on equity and inclusivity resonating among the student electorate.
ABVP Retains Key Posts Despite Stiff Competition
Despite NSUI’s resurgence, the ABVP managed to retain its stronghold on two pivotal positions. Bhanu Pratap Singh won the Vice-President post, while Mitravinda Karanwal secured the Secretary position. The RSS-affiliated student body emphasized their continued focus on campus infrastructure and academic reforms, which have been central to their campaigns.
The elections this year were highly competitive, with 21 candidates contesting the four central panel positions. Campaigns were characterized by a mix of traditional promises and new-age concerns, such as campus sustainability and better digital resources for students. This duality reflected the diverse priorities of Delhi University’s student body.
"This victory isn’t just an electoral win; it’s a movement for justice, equity, and constitutional values. Under the leadership of our teams, NSUI is back to reclaim its place in Delhi University politics," Varun Choudhary, National President of NSUI, in an official statement following the results.
The elections witnessed a voter turnout of 39%, showcasing an engaged and energized student community. The results, delayed due to a court order regarding defacement cleanup, generated significant anticipation. Students and organizations alike celebrated the peaceful and democratic conduct of the elections.
As the dust settles on this fiercely contested election, the newly elected representatives face high expectations. Key issues on the agenda include improving hostel facilities, addressing safety concerns, and enhancing academic opportunities. With both NSUI and ABVP holding significant portfolios, a balanced approach to governance is expected in the coming tenure.
